One of the world’s most recognized fiction publishers moved harlequin.com to Shopify Plus and got more than a migration. BlueBolt built a fully custom subscriber experience on top of it: self-service subscription management, a personalized ebook bookshelf, and a deep integration with the publishing ERP behind every order.
Harlequin’s storefront sat on aging infrastructure while a large share of revenue came from series subscriptions. A straightforward lift and shift to Shopify Plus was complicated by three factors: fulfillment ran through Advantage, a publishing-specific ERP still in active development by a third-party vendor; subscription requirements surfaced mid-project and grew into a full custom account platform; and every release had to be validated across three separate teams.
BlueBolt delivered a full Shopify Plus implementation with a purpose-built subscriber dashboard at its center, giving readers self-service control over upgrades, downgrades, pauses, cancellations, and payment details. Around it: a redesigned subscription PDP, a personalized ebook bookshelf, gated subscriber content, custom Algolia discovery, and eight platform integrations including Advantage, Auth0, SailThru, Loqate, and Chase.
The original scope was a migration. What Harlequin actually needed was ownership of the subscriber relationship, and that only became clear as the build progressed. The engagement grew into a custom account platform, a new subscription PDP, and an integration layer connecting Shopify to a publishing ERP that was itself still being built. BlueBolt absorbed every shift without losing the client’s confidence or the thread of the project.
Harlequin readers can now manage their own subscriptions end to end: upgrade a series, downgrade a tier, pause a shipment, update a card, or cancel outright. Every action that previously required a phone call now happens in the account. The dashboard was built from scratch rather than bolted on through an app, which meant Harlequin kept full control over the logic, the design, and the data.
Subscription products do not behave like books, so they should not look like them. BlueBolt designed and built a dedicated product detail page for subscription titles, with the term, cadence, and commitment presented clearly before checkout. It replaced a page that had been forcing subscription logic into a standard product layout.
Orders, subscriptions, and account balances sync between Shopify Plus and Advantage, the publishing ERP that runs Harlequin fulfillment through vendor ACS. The integration was in active development on the ACS side throughout the build, so BlueBolt engineered against a moving target and reworked as it matured. It now carries every print, ebook, and subscription order.
Harlequin needed enterprise reliability without giving up control of the subscriber experience. Shopify Plus gave BlueBolt a stable commerce core and enough room to build everything else around it.
Shopify Plus checkout customization made room for subscription flows and offline account balance payments without forcing Harlequin into a workaround.
Building the subscription layer natively rather than through an off-the-shelf app meant Harlequin owns the logic, the data, and the roadmap.
Dozens of imprints, print and digital catalogs, and a large recurring subscriber base running on infrastructure Harlequin no longer has to maintain.
Familiar admin, standard integration patterns, and documented customizations mean day-to-day operations do not depend on a developer.
