Creating a Digital Textbook to Further the Mission of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association■
The mission of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) is to promote excellence in care for injured patients, through provision of scientific forums and support of musculoskeletal research and education of both Orthopaedic Surgeons and the public. The Orthopaedic Trauma Association is dedicated to advancing the quality, availability and utilization of resources for education for members and nonmembers alike. Taught by some of the most highly regarded traumatologists, orthopaedic trauma education is offered at every career stage. An extensive array of educational platforms is offered inluding live courses, webinars on-demand recorded content and now a digital textbook.
After completing OTA’s site search project, the Orthopaedic Trauma Association partnered with BlueBolt to design and create a textbook app that will allow authenticated users to browse through educational material on any online device via a web browser (desktop, mobile, tablet).

Completing Stakeholder and User Discovery
During discovery, the BlueBolt team did a deep dive into OTA’s business requirements, reviewing analytics and completing interviews with stakeholders and members.
Implementing Design and User Experience Strategy
BlueBolt’s Creative Design team compiled data points and developed a creative strategy to better guide users through the textbook.
Developing the OTA Textbook
OTA engaged BlueBolt to create an online textbook to further their mission of digitally educating Orthopaedic Surgeons and patients alike.
BlueBolt conducted discovery meetings to establish and document specific requirements related to the project’s features. These requirements are now reflected in the visual textbook design. BlueBolt first created wireframes, and then created creative concepts. Once OTA approved the designs, the development phase began.
The textbook material is classified into chapters consisting of textual content, images, videos, and references. OTA requested a simple landing page for the OTA Textbook with key features and a brief overview. Bluebolt crafted strong headlines and sourced unique icons to encourage users to scroll the page and convert. Members will now have a variety of tools to help optimize their learning experience, including bookmarking, highlighting, and the ability to adjust text and media for viewing (font size, zooming, etc.).
The OTA textbook includes a content management capability so that OTA can enter the textbook content into the system and make whatever adjustments are needed. OTA’s textbook app was built and is hosted on the Backendless platform, with Vimeo integrations.

BlueBolt delivered the OTA Textbook app on time and on budget. We are looking forward to the Orthopaedic Trauma Association launching this textbook app so that their members can have access to enhanced, real time educational experiences.
