After running their eCommerce stores on Magento technology for years, HarperCollins wanted a quick turnaround to move their Christian Publishers websites onto Shopify Plus to take advantage of Shopify’s enterprise features and overall stability. After running their B2C ecommerce stores on Magento technology for years, the HarperCollins Christian Publishers team grew tiresome of the continual challenges that came with application updates, security issues, and the overall amount of support necessary for application and infrastructure issues. Through an exhaustive review of ecommerce technologies, they ultimately decided to move forward with the Shopify Plus platform for its flexibility, ease of use, and stability. After nearly a year of unsuccessfully trying to get a Shopify Plus solution off the ground with another vendor, HarperCollins Christian Publishers stakeholders partnered with BlueBolt based on our expertise implementing B2C and B2B ecommerce projects and our deep knowledge of customizing the Shopify Plus platform.

Leveraging the native functionality and Shopify Plus Scripts, BlueBolt developed custom functionality related to product metadata, customer accounts, customer groups and bulk purchasing, as well as promotions and pricing at checkout. The BlueBolt team worked with the HarperCollins Christian Publishers team to integrate their custom middleware system and JD Edwards data source leveraging the Shopify Plus API to call the HarperCollins Christian Publishers custom middleware system. The BlueBolt and HarperCollins Christian Publishers teams worked in tandem to quickly plan, develop and test the elements as they were being developed. While challenges arose over the course of the implementation, solutions were quickly found through custom scripting and apps to compliment Shopify Plus capabilities.

From the onset of the engagement, the team was faced with a looming Magento license expiration and was pressed to migrate to Shopify Plus quickly. Together, the BlueBolt and HarperCollins Christian Publishers drove an aggressive implementation plan, ensuring there would be zero disruption to the HarperCollins Christian Publishers business.

Leveraging the native functionality within Shopify Plus, BlueBolt rebuilt both Christian Bookstore – Bibles and Church Resources and FaithGateway Store – Christian Book Store in 6 weeks, in advance of their Magento license expiration. Since that time, conversions have been up 2%, AOV has increased around 14%, and calls into Customer Service for support have steadily decreased due to improved automation and usability enhancements.
