Moen partnered with BlueBolt to enhance their direct-to-consumer (DTC) experience through a series of complex Shopify customizations and strategic integrations with legacy backend order systems. The project focused on streamlining customer journeys, enabling secure Single Sign-On (SSO), and ensuring accurate cart behavior—all while maintaining the performance and flexibility needed for enterprise-scale operations.
Logic was added to the Add to Cart submit so that if a cached version of the page is viewed (with an insurance bundle in the cart), the duplicate is prevented when the Add to Cart button is clicked. Also, if a user opens a new tab and adds to the cart from different tabs, the logic on the Add to Cart button catches this.
Custom Extension App for the utility discount has an admin UI that provides the following functions: Bulk upload of discount codes and account numbers; check the status of a discount code or account number; update the account number as redeemed; update the account number as available for use; view the number of account numbers and usages per discount code.

The customer ID is encrypted on the Order History liquid template in Shopify. The encrypted ID and the current user’s email address are sent to the custom middleware to retrieve order history data. Once the customer ID is verified and matches the current user’s email address, then the middleware makes an API call to the backend order system to retrieve the order history information. The middleware will make another call to the Shopify API to retrieve the current user’s Shopify Orders. The two order sets (backend order system and Shopify) are combined into a single list of orders and returned to the user’s browser.
One key initiative involved developing logic to prevent duplicate insurance bundles from being added to a customer’s cart. This logic executes both on the Insurance Landing Page load and Add to Cart actions, covering scenarios like multi-tab shopping and cached page views. BlueBolt also implemented a custom Shopify Extension App to support utility discounts. This app prompts customers to verify their utility account in real time through an external API. It gives Moen admin tools to bulk upload, reset, and track discount code redemptions, ensuring accuracy and flexibility in managing promotions.
In addition, BlueBolt led the implementation of phase one of Moen’s SSO integration, enabling customers to log into Shopify using their non-Shopify credentials. This integration also supports a consolidated Order History view that merges legacy backend order system orders with new Shopify orders. To accomplish this, BlueBolt developed a custom middleware application that securely matches customer IDs and emails before retrieving order data via API calls to both systems.
Finally, BlueBolt modernized Moen’s product page template by enabling SKU-based URLs to support a direct “Buy Now” experience. A custom middleware service dynamically maps Moen SKUs to Shopify product URLs, allowing users to bypass redirects and head straight to checkout, enhancing user experience and SEO performance. These customizations empower Moen with a scalable, integrated Shopify ecosystem designed for long-term digital growth.
The comprehensive suite of custom solutions delivered by BlueBolt has significantly enhanced Moen’s digital storefront, resulting in a smoother, more intuitive shopping experience for customers and streamlined operations behind the scenes. By preventing duplicate insurance bundles, validating discount codes in real-time, and enabling unified Single Sign-On with consolidated order history, Moen has strengthened customer trust and boosted checkout efficiency. The functionality further accelerated purchase flow and improved SEO, directly supporting Moen’s DTC growth objectives.
